Recruitment of a PhD Candidate in the OPUS project

The Stecko Research Group, Institute of Organic Chemistry PAS, Warsaw, Poland

General info

The Call IS OPENED

We are looking for highly motivated candidate holding a MSc degree in Organic Synthesis and ready to work as a PhD candidate in our project devoted to the remote C(sp3)-H functionalization of difunctional compounds finansed by the Polish National Science Center (grant OPUS).

Project name:

The amidyl radical initiated remote C(sp3)-H functionalization of bifunctional compounds

Position type:

PhD candidate

No. of positions available:

1

Researcher profile:

R1

Job description:

The announced research project, funded by Polish National Science Center, is devoted to develop novel methods for self- and a directing group aided C(sp3)-H functionalization of simple bi- and polyfunctional organic molecules. Most of the efforts will be put on the development mild and versatile protocols under modern radical photoredox or electrochemical conditions. Previous experience with organic photochemistry and/or electrochemistry will be an additional asset.

The PhD candidate (PDC) will be responsible for synthesizing, depositing, and characterizing of the starting materials and intermediates, followed by an optimization of reaction conditions for model transformations of radical initiated remote C(sp3)-H functionalization of bi- and polyfuntional organic compounds. In extension,  the PDC will investigate a scope of the developed protocols, including starting material variations, reaction condition variation (photoredox, electrochemical, transition-metal catalyzed process). Key efforts will be put on an investigation of asymmetric mode of the investigated C-H functionalization along with application studies devoted to synthesis of the selected bioactive or medicinally important molecule by using investigated process. Complementary theoretical studies on reaction mechanisms may be performed by the PDS or as part of a collaboration, depending on the scholar’s interests. To a certain degree, the PDC will be given intellectual freedom in defining their research.

The PhD candidate will also participate in the Institute scientific life by attending to group and institute seminars and lectures. The PhD candidate will also attend to advanced course devoted to modern organic chemistry and spectroscopy. Detailed information about the rules and courses for PhD students of Warsaw4phd School can be found at the school website and Institute of Organic Chemistry PAS website.

Stage 1:

Submission of the application by Candidates

Deadline for submitting applications:

August 11th, 2023

Stage 2:

The formal evaluation of the submitted applications

Stage 3:

First stage Candidates' evaluation

The substantive assessment of the documents sent, including the assessment of experience and skills in the field of organic synthesis based on submitted documents and data collected in the PSE form*. The link to the PES form will be send to the selected candidates.

The selection of Candidates for an interview.

* Please reliably fill in both forms, in particular PSE one, which will be the basis for assessing and verifying your organic chemistry knowledge, professional experience and skills during an interview.

Stage 4:

Second stage Candidates' evaluation

At this stage selected Candidates will be invited on an interview. This interview will be combined with and interview to Warsaw4PhD Doctoral School.

The interview will be perfored stationary at the Insitute of Organic Chemistry PAS in Warsaw, Poland, or remotly by using electronic means of communications (e.g. Skype, Zoom, Teams). The way of conducting the interview will be agreed individually with each Candidate.

Schedule of interviews:

the term of interviews will be provided later

Stage 5:

The final evaluation of the Candidates.

The selection of the postdoctoral scholar.

The competition settlement date: end of September 2023

ATTENTION!

Candidates who are not PhD Students of the Warsaw4PhD Doctoral School MUST also take part in the recruitment process to the Warsaw-4-PhD Doctoral School!
